The Art of Materials: Designing with What We Have
In a world of endless possibilities, designers are often encouraged to innovate with the newest materials and technologies. But what if the key to truly transformative design lies not in what’s new, but in what’s already here? baltimore & Michigan based— Common Object Studio, we believe that the future of design isn’t about chasing the latest trends—it’s about rediscovering and elevating the potential of what surrounds us.
Every region has its own unique material palette shaped by its environment, industries, and waste streams. The question isn’t just, “What can we design?” but rather, “How can we design with what we already have?” For instance:
Urban Wood Waste: Cities like Baltimore and New York generate vast amounts of discarded wood.
Agricultural Byproducts: Consider fibers like hemp, flax, and wool that might otherwise be overlooked. By partnering with local farmers and processors, designers can create supply chains that are regenerative and community-focused.
For our OkaTerra line, we worked closely with local wood mills and regenerative farms. By prioritizing materials that reflect the ecology and economy of their origins, we created products that are as sustainable as they are beautiful.
Designers hold the power to elevate materials through thoughtful application. By giving value to overlooked resources, we create demand for sustainable supply chains and foster a deeper connection between products and their origins.
At Common Object Studio, we’re rethinking materiality, Sustainable & regenerative Designs. We’re not just designing objects; we’re designing systems that work for people and the planet. What overlooked material could you transform today?
